We keep hearing that measurement is going to be the most important skill for social media practitioners this year. The ability to match a metric to an objective that will measure a specific outcome will start to separate the social media men from the boys, as they say. If you want to get a handle on that process, this book is for you. If you just want to measure hits, likes and retweets, you just might get a paradigm shift reading the book.

Katie D. Payne's Measure What Matters is the preeminent work in this area to date. I know I'm going out on a limb saying that, because there have been some good books written on measurement. But nothing as thorough and in-depth as this, in my view. I've read them all, believe me.

Even though this book includes some heavy lifting, it's worth the time it takes to read carefully and learn. Those of us without a business or marketing degree may have to slow down in some spots, but for the most part, this book goes at a pace that most marketing and communications practitioners should easily feel comfortable with. I love the fact that the book also offers specfic advice on measuring events, relationships with local communities, higher ed, crisis, internal employee relationships, sales and partner relationships, and the list goes on. It is thorough, and it will open your eyes to the fact that there are much more effective ways of measuring than HITS (How Idiots Track Success). Must read.

Easy to read. I tore through it, March 8, 2011

Some basic programming ability is a must for this book, as the first page starts with installing the Python development tools. If you don't know Python, that is okay since all the code is easy to follow. Everything you need to develop and run the examples is described step by step with clear instructions at every point.

Once you get comfortable with the basics, the author quickly moves from topic to topic, giving a good introduction into many aspects of how to mine data and generate useful conclusions. Some of the examples include

accessing your twitter feed with OAuth,
processing feeds to determine influence,
using set-wise opeations with redis to determine which of your friends are also followers,
storing data in CouchDB,
using map-reduce to determine the most popular mentions and topics,
natural language processing,
and seeing data with various visualization tools.

And that was just for Twitter.

The book continues on with examples of processing mailboxes, LinkedIn, Google Buzz, blogs, Facebook, and the Semantic Web. The examples show how easy it is to gather and analyze data from all these social web sites.

With a good breadth of coverage, I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn to process and visualize large amounts of data, either from the social web or any other data source.

This book covers a lot of ground. It's, at times, a bit vertiginous in the amount of subjects and technologies it touches per chapter, and is not always easy to follow. It can also introduce so many interesting things that, by the time you finished becoming familiar with all of them, after wandering for hours on the web, jumping from interesting technology to interesting technology, you may have forgotten what took you to these places and wonder where you were in the book. Time spent reading it is, however, time very well spent. When you finish it, you will have at least a cursory familiarity with tools like OAuth, CouchDB, Redis, MapReduce, NumPy (and the Python programming language, albeit it will help you a lot if you know your way around Python before you start the book), Graphviz, SIMILE widgets, NLTK, various service APIs and data formats, and will be well equipped to explore those rich datasets on your own. The chapters are well compartmentalized and it's easy to pick chapters to read according to your needs. I know that, when I face the problems they tackle, I will do exactly that.

If you do any kind of analysis and visualization of social-generated data that's on the web, this book is a good pick. Even if your datasets are not from the web, you may find the parts on analysis and visualization very interesting.

Mining the Social Web does a great job of introducing a wide variety of techniques and wealth of resources for exploring freely available social data and personal information. If you are willing to spend the time tinkering with the examples, the book is pure fun. It offers a nice compliment to Segaran's Programming Collective Intelligence: Building Smart Web 2.0 Applications. The two books overlap but where they do offer different perspectives and explanations of common techniques (e.g., TF-IDF, cosine similarity, Jaccard index). If you are well-versed in data mining the web you may find much of the discussion familiar. If you have only been casually engaged to date, your toolbox will fill quickly.

In order to work with the book's examples related to LinkedIn and Facebook you really need to have a robust collection of connections. In terms of the source code itself, most of it worked as is. I wasn't able to install the Buzz library which limited my interaction with material in chapter 7 and opted to not get involved with the LinkedIn or Facebook but found the discussions around them easy to follow. By far my favorite chapter in the book was chapter 8, "Blogs et al.: Natural Language Processing (and Beyond)..." It was quite fascinating and caused my reading list to grow considerably.

This book goes a long way to help businesses identify the case for great content creation and content marketing and sharing as a key element in today's marketing strategy. Bernie provides background information on social media marketing concepts and tools, case studies, resources, and ideas to help small- to medium-sized businesses get started in social media marketing or ramp up their current efforts. As one who is out in the trenches with some clients who are still hesitant about starting or expanding social media efforts, I'd like to see a sequel with more information about how to address executives' legitimate concerns about brand dilution, confidentiality, legal issues, and employee productivity issues associated with the use of social media in the workplace. The addition of some charts, diagrams and illustrations would be helpful to make the points more easily understandable to those who are not as familiar with the topic, or who want a quick overview. This book focuses WAY to much on Big Business while ignoring the small entrepreneur. He writes at length about "aligning" yourself with the "right" executives, reading industry journals, and even researching competitors CEO's on Facebook! He even suggests spending months "developing" your companies social media strategy.
Puh-leeease! Let's throw some focus groups and committees in there while we are at it! And he writes like a college professor - many, many words, very little content.
His premise is also baloney. He is writing a book that will help the Sargent tell the General how to run the Army better. I have worked at many big companies, and I can tell you this-
management does not give a rat's behind what anyone below them thinks. They don't even listen if you tell them the break room is on fire.
There is nothing in here that a small biz owner can use. I am very disappointed in this book and feel I wasted my money buying it.

I have read many of the latest social media marketing books out there and have found that they present the topic at too high a level. They seem to try and convince you that social media is the next big thing in marketing. For those of us that have been out there and seeing firsthand that social media is taking over, we need a book with a little more meat. A book that starts to get down into the nuts and bolts of how to use social media marketing in your organization and give you some firepower to convince upper management. Marketing 2.0 is this book! @mdlorey

Valuable collection of case studies on the change created by social media, March 7, 2011

This volume very usefully brings together a range of case studies about the value created by different applications of social media, complemented nicely by some good categorization which allows for cross-study learning (e.g. "technical", "verticals", "employment", "non profits" etc.) There are also some intriguing personal reflections and stories, and a bit of futurist prognostication along the way. The merit of this book is its focus on real applications in real situations, with rich detail and references in each chapter. It also has a nice sampling of different global cases, avoiding what's often a US bias in many new trend books. One wishes for some fuller treatment of certain topics (the categories have a range of coverage, which varies a lot) and more cross-case study analysis and reflection by the author himself. The book also suffers from the inevitable problem that it will become dated very quickly, though that is not to decry the author for his noble attempt to capture an important slice of social and business history in the making at this particular point in time. The volume is best read with a computer handy so one can refer and understand face to face the magic of all the blogs, Facebook pages, tweets, and other media in living color and flow described in the essays. After reading it, I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn everything Facebook - whether you're a newbie - or a seasoned entrepreneur. If you appreciate clear instruction, in plain-English, this book is going to help you. One thing that I especially appreciated about The Complete Idiot's Guide to Facebook is that it's not just a regurgitated "How to" guide. It explains the principles behind the various features - so when the Facebook makes changes, you'll still understand what you're doing.

What if you already have experience with Facebook? Well, I do - and I learned there was a lot of features I haven't been using. Features that can improve my business. I've always "poo-poo'ed" the idea of the special page for my business, but, well - I'll be building one this weekend.
